Maines to propose facility expansion New distribution building also planned
By My-Ly Nguyen
Press & Sun-Bulletin CONKLIN -- Maines Paper & Food Service Inc. is proposing to expand its corporate headquarters and construct a distribution facility nearby. Under review by the town are the company's proposals to: * Add about 76,400 square feet to existing corporate headquarters in the Broome Corporate Park in Conklin for a dry storage warehouse and associated loading dock, a legal ad published recently said. * Construct a one-story, approximately 76,655-square-foot food distribution facility on a 14.1-acre site on Maple Drive in the Broome Corporate Park. The facility would feature cooler and freezer space, dry storage, a cooler loading dock, a dry loading dock and associated offices, a second legal ad said. Estimated total project costs have not been released. Maines President and Chief Executive Officer Christopher Mellon said the company will issue more details in the next several weeks. He said the company needs the additional space to accommodate its continued growth. "It couldn't have come at a better time," Conklin Supervisor Debbie Preston said. "We're taking a big hit on our tax base." Mellon said Maines had planned to expand before late June flooding engulfed the company's Terrace Drive distribution facility, other areas of Conklin and the company's Food & Party Warehouse in Johnson City. Maines has said it lost $2.5 million in Burger King food and supplies after as much as 14 feet of water flooded the 124,000-square-foot warehouse, which serves as the main supplier for Burger Kings in upstate New York, New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania. The company transferred Burger King distribution responsibilities to its main warehouse and to an operation at the former Phillips Foundry, both in the Conklin corporate park. Maines Food & Party Warehouse in Johnson City also suffered flood damage, including "structural damages beyond repair," according to the company's Web site. Maines has said it will reopen the food and party supplies store this fall at 1018 Upper Front St. in Chenango, the site of the former Morey's Restaurant. Maines has applied to the Broome County Industrial Development Agency for help with the Conklin expansion projects, in the form of sale-leaseback assistance, exemptions from mortgage recording taxes and sales taxes related to construction costs, and abatement of real property taxes. "They're a well established, good corporate citizen in our community," Broome County IDA Executive Director Richard D'Attilio said. "We look forward to helping them continue to grow."
